Baseball Biographies (past and present)
Brett Walters (2018/19 - present)
I began playing at South Perth in Little League at age 10 with Alfie Letchford as my first coach.
Played all my junior baseball at South Perth and was able to represent WA in the U18's for 2 years. Represented Australia in the U19's World Championships in Monterrey, Mexico
Was selected to play for the Perth Heat when I was 18. Luckily one road trip in Qld I happened to pitch during the National Youth Championships and there were scouts present at the Heat game. I was signed to a professional contract with the San Diego Padres as a pitcher.
I spent 6 seasons with the San Diego organisation and worked my way through to AA. I had pitched well to that point in my career but arm injuries caught up with me and I ended up having shoulder surgery in 1998. The shoulder never recovered from the surgery and the next year I was released. Played a little bit of Independent baseball in Reno, Nevada to finish off that year.
I returned home and re-joined South Perth in the 1999-2000 season as part of the pitching staff, helping the team win our first State League title in 33 years which was pretty awesome. We had an impressive team over a 12 year period. We had strong pitching coming through the junior ranks along with some settled veteran guys and our hitting and defence was excellent.
I transitioned to outfield and then to third base later in my career, making a number of State League All-Star teams and had the honour of winning the South Perth "Alfie" award a number of times. I was a member of all 7 State League championships since 1999-2000 and also helped win a AAA championship along the way.
2018/19 will be my 34th year with South Perth. It's a great club with a great history and I am hoping to continue that as club coach for the next couple of years. We have a good core of players with some excellent youth coming through which puts South Perth in a good position to start challenging again for titles in the near future.
Rod Drew (to 2017/18)
Rod has served baseball across a multitude of levels since the early 90's, graduating to the State Junior coach ranks in 2001. Since then, he has been the Head Coach or Assistant at both the under 14 and under 16 levels and experienced success on the diamond that many could only dream of. He has been at the forefront of Western Australia's high performance programs, working with hundreds of junior players to assist them on their baseball journey. On top of this, Rod has been heavily involved in club baseball, Head Coaching two strong State League clubs, Morley and South Perth. Rod's reputation for working with junior players and coaches is renowned and his ability to translate the finer points of the game into a language and manner that people of all levels can understand is second to none.
